Push Cakes Tutorial

I thought that it was about time I shared a little tutorial on making push cakes. The process is no more complicated than making cup cakes for a party but the benefit is that these treats are already portioned out and wrapped in an airtight container for easy storage and transport. This batch had to travel in the heat for an hour up to the Hunter Valley on the weekend and were still as fresh as when I first made them.

012Note to self find a more appropriate stand than my fruit bowl for next time.

You will need the following:

  • Push Delight Canisters (available here)
  • Cake mix of your choice
  • Mini Muffin Pan
  • Icing of your choice (thick consistency)
  • Piping bag and tip

For this batch I made an orange flavoured cake and baked in a mini muffin pan, these will fit perfectly into the push delight canisters.

Once the cakes have cooled, mix up a batch of icing, be sure to make the icing mixture very thick as this will serve as the glue for holding the cakes in the canister. Lay out all of your canisters and of course, a cup of tea (it was 9am so I decided against a glass of wine).

Recently Updated4I don’t recommend having an argument with the icing sugar, it really takes forever to clean up.

Once you have the icing at the right consistency fill a piping bag and you are ready to assemble.

Start by piping a little icing onto the base of the canister, this will glue the first cake down so it stays in place when pushing the cakes back up to eat.

Place the first cake on top of the icing and pull the handle down until it is completely retracted.

Pipe a thick layer of icing onto the cake.

Place the second cake on top of the icing and finish with a final layer of icing.

Place the lid on top of the canister and you are finished!

If you are very clever, they will look like this (image thanks to Clever Baker Friend)
